Yes, you read that right. Taiwan’s Super Basketball League (easily the greatest international league name) is still going on and much like you, I can’t believe I didn’t know about this earlier. The second I saw this line available on my sportsbook, I opened a new tab in my browser with the kind of speed and athleticism you would expect from a degenerate going through withdrawal. Then, one new tab became two. Then four. Then eight. Before you knew it, my browser looked eerily similar to a guy who is just trying to find “the right video” at 4 a.m.
Upon my extensive deep-dive into the world of Taiwanese basketball, I have gained a newfound respect for a culture that I knew nothing of. First and foremost, once I read the team names, I had already decided this is my new favorite sports league of all time. So, if you’re looking to jump onto a bandwagon with me, you have five clubs you can choose from.
- Yulon Luxgen Dinos
- Taoyuan Pauian Archiland (which also translates to, “Taoyuan Pure-Youth Construction Basketball”)
- Kaohsiung Jeoutai Technology (formely known as the Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor Basketball Team)
- And of course, who could forget “Bank of Taiwan”
But as for me, my new favorite team are the Taiwan Beer, who were formerly know as: “Taiwan Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau Golden Dragons.” In all fairness, their logo is a bear which leads me to believe this is a misspelling the organization has doubled-down on. Now, I wish I was a talented enough writer to have just made all of that up, but I am not. So in short, the S.B.L. has literally everything you could ever want, from dinos, to child construction workers, the very elite Bank of Taiwan and TWO basketball clubs named after booze.
Tomorrow, April 12th at 6 a.m. the Taiwan Beer are going head to head against the Yulon Nexgen Dinos, and I have some stats you might like: The Taiwan Beer are 3-1 against the Dinos in their last 4 matchups, with the Beer beating the Dinos by a margin of 9, 19 and 26. Their only loss to the Dinos had a final score of 74-76. On top of that, the Beer are 8-2 in their last 10 games. So, what’s the spread for tomorrow’s game? Beer (-12)? Beer (-15)? Beer (-20)?! Nope.
